Idaho Falls is the mission's main city. It stands along the Snake River in eastern Idaho and has a population of 64,818 according to the 2020 census.

A short history of the area

Harry Rickets established a ferry across the Snake River in 1864. Freighter Matt Taylor later built a timber-frame toll bridge, and the settlement became known as Taylor's Crossing. By 1866, it was called Eagle Rock because of a basalt island where eagles nested. The city was renamed Idaho Falls in 1891.

The Utah and Northern Railway reached Eagle Rock in 1879 and built an 800-foot bridge across the river. The National Reactor Testing Station opened west of Idaho Falls in 1949. In 1951, a nuclear reactor there produced useful electricity for the first time in history.

  1. 1855Church President Brigham Young asked 26 early Church members to settle among Native Americans on the Salmon River.
  2. June 1855The settlers established Fort Lemhi.
  3. 1858The Fort Lemhi settlers left after problems with Native Americans.
  4. 1860Latter-day Saint settlers came to the Franklin area.
  5. 1879Construction of the Utah Northern Railroad line brought settlement to the upper Snake River Valley.
  6. 1888Ricks Academy was founded.
  7. 1890Idaho received statehood, with Latter-day Saints comprising about one-fifth of the state's population.
  8. 2001Ricks College became a four-year university and was renamed Brigham Young University-Idaho.
