A short history of the area
Gold discoveries brought more settlers to Idaho in 1860, and the Portneuf Valley became a route for stage and freight lines. Pocatello was founded in 1889 and became known as the Gate City because of its role as a gateway to Idaho and the Pacific Northwest. The nearby city of Alameda joined Pocatello in 1962.
The Church here
- 1855Church members established Fort Lemhi near the Salmon River after Brigham Young asked them to settle among Native Americans.
- 1858The Fort Lemhi settlers left after conflicts and difficulties with Native Americans.
- 1860Latter-day Saint settlers came to the Franklin area.
- May 1888Church members in the railroad center of Pocatello were organized as a branch.
- July 1, 1974The Idaho Pocatello Mission was created with Ernest Eberhard Jr. as president.
- 1979The mission's name was changed to the Idaho Boise Mission.
- July 1, 1991The Idaho Pocatello Mission was re-established with Wayne W. Probst as president.
