About the mission

The Indonesia Jakarta Mission is based in Jakarta and serves Indonesia. Missionary headquarters were established in Jakarta in 1975, and the mission reopened there in 1995.

Indonesian is the main language of the mission. Missionaries and families will hear it in daily life, church meetings, shops, and throughout the city.

A short history of the area

The area now known as Jakarta has been inhabited since the early centuries of the Common Era. In 1527, Islamic forces captured the settlement and it became known as Jayakarta. The Dutch East India Company seized and rebuilt it as Batavia in 1619.

Batavia was renamed Jakarta during the Japanese occupation in 1942. Indonesia proclaimed its independence in Jakarta on August 17, 1945, and the city became the capital again in 1950. Today, Jakarta is known as the Big Durian and stands on the island of Java.

1969Elder Ezra Taft Benson dedicated Indonesia for the preaching of the gospel on October 26.
1970Six missionaries arrived in Jakarta on January 5 to begin missionary work.
1970The Jakarta Branch was organized on February 15.
1970The first two converts were baptized on March 29.
1970The Church was officially recognized by Indonesia on August 11.
1975The Indonesia Jakarta Mission was created on July 1, and missionary headquarters were established in Jakarta.
1977The Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ was published in Indonesian.
1995The Indonesia Jakarta Mission reopened, and missionaries were assigned to areas outside Java.
2011The first stake in Indonesia was organized.
