A short history of the area
Iowa City became the territorial capital in 1841 and the first capital of the state of Iowa in 1846. The state capital moved to Des Moines in 1857. Iowa City is also known as the Athens of Iowa and became a UNESCO City of Literature in November 2008.
The Church here
- 1846Latter-day Saint pioneers crossed Iowa during their journey west from Nauvoo. The first pioneer company took 131 days to cross the 300 miles.
- 1846Nearly 200 Latter-day Saint pioneers established Garden Grove, where they planted crops and built cabins for later companies.
- 1846About 500 Latter-day Saint men enlisted in the Mormon Battalion at Council Bluffs, Iowa.
- December 1847Brigham Young became President of the Church in Council Bluffs, also called Kanesville.
- 1856–1857Latter-day Saint pioneers used handcarts to cross Iowa.
- 1875A Latter-day Saint branch was established in Keokuk.
- 1878A branch was established in Council Bluffs, and Iowa became part of the Northwestern States Mission.
- 1960Iowa was transferred from the Northern States Mission to the Central States Mission.
