A short history of the area

People have lived in the Tokyo area since ancient times, and Paleolithic sites date from approximately 40,000 to 16,000 BC. Edo was fortified in the late twelfth century, and Ōta Dōkan built Edo Castle in 1457.

In 1603, Tokugawa Ieyasu made Edo the seat from which the country was ruled. Edo was renamed Tokyo, meaning “Eastern Capital,” in 1868, when Emperor Meiji moved the capital from Kyoto. The Great Kantō earthquake struck in 1923, and Tokyo City merged with Tokyo Prefecture in 1943 to form the Tokyo Metropolis.

  1. 1901The Church sends missionaries to Japan, and the Japanese Mission begins.
  2. 1924–1948Political tension closes the Japan Mission.
  3. 1945After World War II, the Church returns to Japan and finds a small group of faithful Japanese converts meeting together.
  4. 1965Many Japanese members sacrifice time and wages to travel to the temple in Hawaii.
  5. 1970The first stake in Japan is established in Tokyo.
  6. 1970sA temple is constructed in Tokyo, the first temple in Asia and the first of three in Japan.
  7. 2011Japanese members help distribute relief supplies and repair damage after the East Japan earthquake and tsunami.
  8. 2019The Japan Tokyo North Mission is re-created in July.
