A short history of the area
Wichita incorporated as a city on July 21, 1870. The railroad arrived in 1872, helping the city become a cattle-shipping center known as Cowtown. Wichita later became a major aircraft-manufacturing center and received the nickname Air Capital of the World.
The Church here
- 1831Members of the Shawnee and Delaware tribes in the Kansas area welcomed missionaries from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
- 1846Church members serving in the Mormon Battalion were trained and equipped at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.
- 1855More than 100 acres of crops were cultivated at Mormon Grove for immigrants traveling west later that year.
- 1882Missionaries arrived in Kansas and organized the Meridian Branch on the border of Dickinson and Salina counties.
- 1887Missionaries returned to Kansas after leaving temporarily because of mob threats.
- 1962The first stake in Kansas was organized.
- 2013The Kansas Wichita Mission was announced, created largely from the Missouri Independence Mission.
- 2022Plans for the Wichita Kansas Temple were announced at the April general conference.
