A short history of the area
Louisville is known as Derby City because the Kentucky Derby has been held at Churchill Downs since 1875. The city also experienced a major tornado in 1890 and a devastating flood in 1937. In 2003, Louisville and Jefferson County merged their governments.
The Church here
- 1832Joseph Smith revisited Louisville after likely preaching there on his way to Missouri and stayed for three days.
- 1835Two missionaries baptized 22 people in Kentucky.
- 1836The first group of Kentucky Saints to join other Church members in the West left for Missouri in September.
- 1843Brigham Young and Wilford Woodruff preached in Kentucky.
- 1876Kentucky became part of the newly organized Southern States Mission on October 9.
- 1928The East Central States Mission was organized on December 9, with headquarters in Louisville. It included Kentucky, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, and Maryland.
- 1929Kentucky was placed in the jurisdiction of the East Central States Mission on January 1.
- 1974The mission name was changed to the Kentucky Louisville Mission on June 20.
