A short history of the area
After Kenya became independent in 1963, Nairobi became the capital of the Republic of Kenya. The city sits about 1,795 meters above sea level and is known for its subtropical highland climate, green spaces, and nearby wildlife areas.
The Church here
- 1970sAmerican USAID employees and their families held Church services in their homes in Kenya.
- 1979The first African converts in Kenya were baptized.
- 1980Elder Farrell and Sister Blanch McGhie became the first two missionaries to arrive in Kenya.
- 1981Branches were created in Nairobi and Kiboko.
- 1991The Church received official recognition in Kenya, and missionary headquarters were established in Nairobi.
- 1994The first Church meetinghouse in Kenya was completed for the Longata Branch in Nairobi.
- 1998President Gordon B. Hinckley became the first Church president to visit Eastern Africa and spoke to 900 members in Nairobi.
- 2001The Nairobi Kenya Stake was organized on September 9 as the first stake in Kenya.
