A short history of the area
The city has endured major challenges, including the First and Second Liberian Civil Wars from 1989 to 2003. Monrovia was also affected by the West Africa Ebola outbreak in 2014 and 2015. Today, it remains Liberia’s largest city and main port.
The Church here
- 1985Joe C. Jarwleh read the Book of Mormon and shared it with fellow members of the Temple of Christ Church.
- 1987Senior missionaries arrived in Liberia, and many members of the Temple of Christ Church were baptized.
- 1987Elder Marvin J. Ashton dedicated Liberia for missionary work in September.
- 1988The Liberia Monrovia Mission was organized on March 1, with J. Duffy Palmer as president.
- 1989The Monrovia Liberia District was created on February 12.
- 1991The mission in Liberia was dissolved because of civil war, and responsibility for the Church was transferred to the Ghana Accra Mission.
- 2000The first stake in Liberia was created in Monrovia on June 11.
- 2015Latter-day Saints helped provide food, cooking oil, and sanitation supplies during the Ebola outbreak.
