A short history of the area
The Chihuahua region has a long history of Indigenous peoples, Spanish settlement, mining, and Catholic missions. Franciscan missionaries arrived in the area in 1554, and Jesuit missionaries began work there in the seventeenth century.
The Church here
- 1875Church leaders called missionaries to open a mission in the Republic of Mexico.
- 1876Missionaries entered Mexico for the first time at El Paso de Norte, Chihuahua, led by Daniel W. Jones.
- 1876The first Sabbath meeting in Mexico was held in Guerrero, Chihuahua, on April 23.
- 1877Jose Epifanio Jesus and four other Mexicans were baptized in Chihuahua, becoming the country's first native-born members.
- 1885The first American-born Latter-day Saint colonists began arriving in Mexico and established eight colonies in Chihuahua and Sonora.
- 1944Temple ordinances were translated into Spanish.
- 1945Mexican Latter-day Saints traveled to Mesa, Arizona, becoming the first in Church history to receive temple ordinances in a language other than English.
- 1961A stake was organized in Mexico City.
- 1983A temple was dedicated in Mexico City.
