A short history of the area
The surrounding territory became Mexico's federal district in 1824. On January 29, 2016, it was officially renamed Ciudad de México, or CDMX, and received greater autonomy. Today, the city is known as La Ciudad de los Palacios, or the City of Palaces.

- 1870sReligious liberty in Mexico encouraged Brigham Young to send the restored gospel to the country.
- 1877After portions of the Book of Mormon were translated into Spanish, missionaries baptized the first converts in Hermosillo.
- 1879A branch was organized in Mexico City.

- 1945Mexican Latter-day Saints traveled to Mesa, Arizona, and became the first in Church history to receive temple ordinances in a language other than English.
