A short history of the area
The surrounding territory became Mexico's federal district in 1824. On January 29, 2016, it was officially renamed Ciudad de México, or CDMX, and received greater autonomy.

- 1870sMexico's progress in securing religious liberty led Brigham Young to conclude that the restored gospel should be taken to Mexico.
- 1877After portions of the Book of Mormon were translated into Spanish, missionaries baptized the first converts in Hermosillo.
- 1879A branch was organized in Mexico City.
- 1944Temple ordinances were translated into Spanish.
- 1945Mexican Latter-day Saints traveled to Mesa, Arizona, and became the first in Church history to receive temple ordinances in a language other than English.
- 1961A stake was organized in Mexico City, the first Spanish-speaking stake in the Church.
