A short history of the area
In 1824, Nuevo León became a state and Monterrey was selected as its capital. The city later grew into an important industrial center, especially after a steel-producing company was founded in 1900.
The Church here
- 1870sMexico’s growing religious liberty led Brigham Young to conclude that the restored gospel should be taken to Mexico.
- 1877After portions of the Book of Mormon were translated into Spanish, missionaries baptized the first converts in Hermosillo.
- 1879A branch was organized in Mexico City, and the Mexico Mission officially opened.
- 1880sSeveral colonies were established in northern Mexico by Latter-day Saints emigrating from the United States.
- 1936–1946Tensions with returning mission leadership led to a painful schism in Mexico before members were reconciled.
- 1944Temple ordinances were translated into Spanish.
- 1945Mexican Saints traveled to the Mesa Arizona Temple to receive temple ordinances in Spanish, the first such ordinances in another language in Church history.
- 1956The Mexican Mission was divided to create the Northern Mexican Mission, later renamed the Mexico Monterrey Mission.
- 1961The first Spanish-speaking stake in the Church was organized in Mexico City.
