A short history of the area
On May 5, 1862, Mexican forces led by Ignacio Zaragoza defeated about 6,000 French troops at the Battle of Puebla. Puebla’s historic center became a World Heritage Site in 1987. The city is also known for its colonial buildings, Talavera pottery, and traditional foods.
The Church here
- 1870sMexico’s progress toward religious liberty led Brigham Young to conclude that the restored gospel should be taken to Mexico.
- 1875Brigham Young called six missionaries to begin preaching in Mexico using Spanish Church materials.
- 1877Missionaries baptized the first converts in Hermosillo after portions of the Book of Mormon had been translated into Spanish.
- 1879A branch was organized in Mexico City.
- 1936–1946Tensions with returning mission leadership caused a painful schism among Church members in Mexico before reconciliation took place.
- 1944Temple ordinances were translated into Spanish.
- 1945Mexican Latter-day Saints traveled to Mesa, Arizona, and became the first in Church history to receive temple ordinances in a language other than English.
- 1961A stake was organized in Mexico City.
- 2024The Mexico Puebla East Mission was announced as a new mission formed from parts of the Mexico Puebla South and Mexico Puebla North Missions.
