A short history of the area
In 1862, Mexican forces defeated about 6,000 French troops at the Battle of Puebla on May 5. Puebla’s historic center became a World Heritage Site in 1987.

- 1870sMexico’s success in securing religious liberty led Brigham Young to conclude that the restored gospel should be taken to Mexico.
- 1877After portions of the Book of Mormon were translated into Spanish, missionaries baptized the first converts in Hermosillo.

- 1944Temple ordinances were translated into Spanish.
- 1945Mexican Latter-day Saints traveled to Mesa, Arizona, becoming the first in Church history to receive temple ordinances in a language other than English.
