A short history of the area
Saltillo became the capital of Coahuila y Tejas in 1824. The city later grew through the arrival of the railroad in 1880 and major automobile manufacturing in the 1970s and 1980s. Today it is known as both the Athens of Mexico and the Detroit of Mexico.
The Church here
- 1870sMexico’s success in securing religious liberty led Brigham Young to conclude that the time had come to take the restored gospel to Mexico.
- 1877After portions of the Book of Mormon were translated into Spanish, missionaries baptized the first converts in Hermosillo.
- 1879A branch was organized in Mexico City.
- 1880sSeveral colonies were established in northern Mexico by Latter-day Saints emigrating from the United States.
- 1936–1946Tensions with returning mission leadership led to a painful schism in the Church in Mexico before members were reconciled.
- 1944–1945Temple ordinances were translated into Spanish, and Mexican Saints traveled to Mesa, Arizona, to receive temple ordinances in a language other than English for the first time in Church history.
