A short history of the area
Torreón was established on September 25, 1893, and declared a city on September 15, 1907. A railroad connecting the city with El Paso helped create a major economic and population boom. During the Mexican Revolution, Torreón was captured more than once, including by Pancho Villa.

- 1870sReligious liberty in Mexico encouraged Brigham Young to take the restored gospel to the country.
- 1879A branch was organized in Mexico City.
- 1880sSeveral colonies were established in northern Mexico by Latter-day Saints emigrating from the United States.
- 1936–1946Tensions with returning mission leadership led to a painful schism in the Church in Mexico before members were reconciled.
- 1944Temple ordinances were translated into Spanish.
- 1945Mexican Saints traveled to Mesa, Arizona, becoming the first in Church history to receive temple ordinances in a language other than English.
- 1956The Mexican Mission was divided, and the Northern Mexico Mission was created.
- 1961The first Spanish-speaking stake in the Church was created in Mexico City.
- 1968The Mexico Torreón Mission was originally organized.
