A short history of the area
The town was recorded as San Marcos Tuxtla in 1748. It became a villa in 1813, joined Mexico with Chiapas in 1824, and was renamed Tuxtla Gutiérrez in 1848. Tuxtla became the capital of Chiapas in 1892.
The Church here
- 1877After portions of the Book of Mormon were translated into Spanish, missionaries baptized the first converts in Hermosillo.
- 1945Mexican Latter-day Saints traveled to Mesa, Arizona, and became the first in Church history to receive temple ordinances in a language other than English.
- 1957The Church dedicated Chiapas for missionary work and began formal proselytism efforts in the Tuxtla Gutiérrez area.
- 1980The first stake in Tuxtla Gutiérrez was organized.
- 1983A temple was dedicated in Mexico City.
