A short history of the area
In 1598, King Philip II of Spain renamed the city Villa Hermosa de San Juan Bautista and granted it a royal coat of arms. Villahermosa became the capital of Tabasco again in 1795, and Governor Francisco J. Múgica restored the shorter name Villahermosa in 1916.

- 1870sReligious liberty in Mexico encouraged Brigham Young to take the restored gospel to the country.
- 1875Six missionaries were called to begin proselytizing in Mexico after portions of the Book of Mormon had been translated into Spanish.
- 1877Missionaries baptized the first converts in Hermosillo.
- 1879A branch was organized in Mexico City.
- 1961A stake was organized in Mexico City, the first Spanish-speaking stake in the Church.
- 1975The Villahermosa Mission was created as one of two new missions in Mexico.
