A short history of the area
Minneapolis was authorized as a town in 1856, founded by Franklin Steele and John H. Stevens, incorporated as a city in 1867, and merged with St. Anthony in 1872. Flour milling and lumber made it an important industrial center, earning it the nickname Mill City.
The Church here
- 1846Eli Houghton and Margaret McMean Houghton traveled from Nauvoo to Monticello, Minnesota, where their three sons lived.
- 1854Latter-day Saint missionaries preached in Minnesota, including in Spring Grove and Morristown.
- 1875Missionaries arrived in the Monticello area, and the Houghton family became the nucleus of the first branch there.
- 1900Sunday Schools were organized in Minneapolis and St. Paul, and converts joined the Church in several Minnesota communities.
- 1912A Twin Cities branch of the Church was established.
- 1924The first purpose-built Church meetinghouse in Minnesota was dedicated in Minneapolis on October 25 and 26.
- 1976The Minnesota Minneapolis Mission was created after the Minnesota-Manitoba Mission and Minnesota-Wisconsin Mission had been organized.
- 2000The St. Paul Minnesota Temple was dedicated.
- 2021Latter-day Saint congregations donated 25,000 pounds of canned goods to the Food Group in New Hope.
