A short history of the area

The area around Jackson was historically populated by the Choctaw. A Choctaw town at the site was called Chisha Foka, meaning “Among the post oaks.” French-Canadian trader Louis LeFleur later settled there, and the village became known as LeFleur’s Bluff.

Jackson became Mississippi’s capital in 1821 and was incorporated in 1822. Union forces captured and burned the city during the Vicksburg campaign in 1863, leaving many chimneys standing and giving Jackson the nickname “Chimneyville.”

1839John D. Hunter and Benjamin L. Clapp arrived in Tishomingo County, where they preached and baptized early converts.
1842Nearly 90 Church members left Mississippi to settle in Nauvoo, Illinois.
1843Local members formed a congregation in Monroe County.
1846Many Monroe County members traveled westward with other Latter-day Saints. They spent the winter in an area now part of Colorado before meeting the main group of Saints.
Civil War eraMissionary efforts in Mississippi ceased during and after the Civil War.
1877Missionary work resumed in Mississippi, and the Baldwin Branch was organized.
1965The Church established its first two stakes in Mississippi, in Hattiesburg and Jackson.
