A short history of the area
The city became an important trade stop between Russia and China after 1727. It was renamed Ulaanbaatar, meaning “Red Hero,” in 1924. In 1990, demonstrations in the city helped lead Mongolia toward democracy and a market economy.
The Church here
- 1992Six missionary couples arrived to assist Mongolia’s higher education program and teach about the Church. The first sacrament meeting was held in the Beesleys’ apartment.
- 1993Lamjav Purevsuren and Tsendkhuu Bat-Ulzii, the first Mongolian converts, were baptized on February 6.
- 1993The Ulaanbaatar Branch was organized in September.
- 1993Elder Neal A. Maxwell dedicated Mongolia for the teaching of the restored gospel on April 15.
- 1995The Mongolia Ulaanbaatar Mission was officially organized on July 1, with Elder Richard E. Cook as its first mission president.
- 1999The first meetinghouse was dedicated on June 6 in a historic Ulaanbaatar building known as the “Children’s Cinema.”
- 2023The Church in Mongolia marked the 30th year of the Mongolian Mission.
