The Montana Billings Mission is centered in Billings, Montana, in the northern Rocky Mountain region of the United States. Billings is the largest city in Montana and is known as the Magic City.

A short history of the area

The Billings area was settled by people from the Gallatin Valley area, who formed Coulson in 1877. Billings was founded by the Northern Pacific Railway in 1882 and named for Frederick H. Billings, a former president of the railroad. The city was incorporated on March 24, 1882.

Billings grew from three buildings to more than 2,000 within a few months, earning the nickname “Magic City.” By 1910, the city had 10,031 residents and was one of the fastest-growing communities in the United States.

The Church here

  1. 1860sThe Montana gold rush attracted Church members to the area.
  2. 1869Completion of the overland railway attracted more Church members to Montana.
  3. 1896The Montana Mission was organized.
  4. 1897A meeting of 75 people was held in Anaconda, followed later that spring by a gathering of 300 people in Butte.
  5. October 1897Church leaders in Montana received a promise of religious freedom from Governor John E. Rickards.
  6. 1999The Billings Montana Temple was dedicated.
