A short history of the area
The settlement moved about five miles east in 1866 and became known as Missoula Mills before the name was shortened to Missoula. Fort Missoula was established in 1877, the Northern Pacific Railway arrived in 1883, and the University of Montana was established there in 1893.

- 1860sThe Montana gold rush attracted Church members to Montana.
- 1869Completion of the overland railway attracted Church members to Montana.
- 1896The Montana Mission was organized under the Bannock Stake.
- October 1897Church leaders in Montana received a promise of religious freedom from Governor John E. Rickards.
- 1897A meeting of 75 people was held in Anaconda, followed later that spring by a gathering of 300 people in Butte.
- 1999The Billings Montana Temple was dedicated.
