About the mission

The Mozambique Nampula Mission is based in Nampula, a major city in northern Mozambique. Nampula is about 200 kilometres from the coast and connects the port of Nacala with Malawi and other inland areas.

Portuguese is the mission language. It is the official language of Mozambique and is used in Church settings, schools, government, and travel.

A short history of the area

Nampula was founded by the Portuguese colonial army in 1907 and became a city in 1956. During the war for independence, it served as a strategic military center. After Mozambique became independent in 1975, many Portuguese residents left, while rural families moved into the city.

Nampula grew quickly during the civil war, especially between 1982 and 1992. Today it is Mozambique’s third-largest city and is known as A Capital Do Norte, or “The Capital of the North.”

The Church here

  1. 1992The Church shipped 1 million pounds of food and relief items to people suffering during a severe drought in Mozambique and neighboring countries.
  2. 1996The first branch in Mozambique was created in Maputo, and the Church received legal recognition from the government.
  3. Late 1990sSeminary and institute classes began for youth in Mozambique.
  4. January 1999A second branch was organized in Beira.
  5. June 1999The first missionaries came to Mozambique.
  6. December 1999The first Mozambican missionary was called.
  7. 2002More than 20 Mozambican missionaries had been called, serving in Mozambique and other countries.
  8. April 13, 2003The Beira Mozambique District was organized as the country’s first district.
