A short history of the area

In 1829, Antonio Armijo's expedition stopped at the natural springs in the Las Vegas Valley. The name Las Vegas, meaning “the meadows,” referred to the fertile lowlands near the springs. John C. Frémont arrived in 1844, and downtown Las Vegas's Fremont Street is named after him.

Las Vegas was settled in 1905 when land beside the Union Pacific Railroad tracks was auctioned. The city incorporated on March 16, 1911. In 1931, Nevada legalized casino gambling and reduced divorce residency requirements to six weeks. Today, Las Vegas is also known for its historic downtown and desert surroundings.

The Church here

  1. 1855Thirty Latter-day Saints from Utah traveled to the Las Vegas area and built a fort beside the spring and creek in the valley.
  2. 1883A branch was organized at Overton, Nevada.
  3. 1912Overton became the headquarters of Nevada's first permanent stake, the Moapa Stake.
  4. 1954The Las Vegas Stake was created.
  5. 1975The Nevada Las Vegas Mission was organized on July 1.
  6. 1989The Las Vegas Nevada Temple was dedicated.
  7. 1997The Nevada Las Vegas Mission was divided, and the Nevada Las Vegas West Mission was created.
  8. 2021A third Nevada temple was announced for Elko.
