About the mission

The mission has two main population centers: the Reno, Sparks, Carson City, and Lake Tahoe area, and western parts of Las Vegas. Missionary service has also included communities along I-80, in Carson City, and around western Las Vegas.

English and Spanish are spoken in the mission.

A short history of the area

Las Vegas began as a settlement beside the Union Pacific Railroad tracks in 1905, when 110 acres were auctioned. The city was incorporated on March 16, 1911. The valley's name comes from the Spanish phrase for “the meadows,” referring to the fertile lowlands near its natural springs.

Las Vegas grew rapidly after Nevada legalized casino gambling in 1931. Today, the city is known for entertainment, tourism, downtown attractions, and its hot Mojave Desert climate.

The Church here

  1. 1855Thirty Latter-day Saints from Utah traveled to the Las Vegas area and built a fort beside a spring and creek in the valley.
  2. 1864Latter-day Saints established a settlement in Panaca.
  3. 1883A branch was organized at Overton.
  4. 1912Overton became the headquarters of Nevada’s first permanent stake, the Moapa Stake.
  5. 1954The Las Vegas Stake was created.
  6. 1989The Las Vegas Nevada Temple was dedicated.
  7. 1997The Nevada Las Vegas West Mission was organized.
  8. 2000The Reno Nevada Temple was dedicated.
  9. 2021A third Nevada temple was announced for Elko.
