A short history of the area
Manchester grew around the Merrimack River and its water-powered mills. The Amoskeag Manufacturing Company became one of the world’s largest cotton textile plants, but the company declared bankruptcy in 1935. Since the 1980s, the Millyard and downtown have experienced renewed interest.

- 1811The family of Joseph Smith Jr. moved to Lebanon, now West Lebanon, where they rented a home for two years.
- 1811–1813Joseph Smith Jr. suffered a severe bone infection in his leg, and Dr. Nathan Smith saved the leg.
- 1832Joseph Smith received a revelation calling Orson Pratt and Lyman E. Johnson to missions in the eastern United States.
- 1832Orson Pratt and Lyman E. Johnson arrived in New Hampshire, stayed for 26 days, and initially baptized 20 people.
- 1840sSeveral Latter-day Saint congregations were meeting together in New Hampshire.
- 1844Missionary work in New Hampshire lessened after the murder of Joseph Smith and the movement of many Church members west.
- Around 1900Latter-day Saints began establishing congregations in New Hampshire again.
