A short history of the area
The town was incorporated and named Farmington in 1901, when it had 548 people. Today, it stands near the meeting place of the San Juan, Animas, and La Plata Rivers. The Navajo name Tóta’ means “where three rivers meet.”
The Church here
- 1846Members of the Mormon Battalion passed through Wagon Mound and Santa Fe on their way to California.
- 1876More than 100 Zuni in the Ramah area received missionaries and joined the Church.
- 1876 onwardMissionary work among Indigenous tribes helped establish growing Latter-day Saint settlements, including Ramah and Fruitland.
- 1912During the Mexican Revolution, New Mexico Church settlements received refugees from Latter-day Saint colonies in Mexico.
- 1930sLatter-day Saint communities in Farmington developed projects to provide necessities for people in need, including a storehouse and a large farm.
- 1984The Church built a large storehouse in Farmington to house and distribute welfare goods.
- 2000The Albuquerque New Mexico Temple was dedicated on March 5 as New Mexico’s first Latter-day Saint temple.
- 2010The New Mexico Farmington Mission was organized.
