About the mission

The New Zealand Auckland Mission is based in Auckland, New Zealand. Auckland sits on the North Island between the Waitematā Harbour and the Manukau Harbour.

English and Māori are spoken in the mission area. Missionaries may hear Māori names, greetings, and place names in daily life.

A short history of the area

Māori settled the Auckland isthmus around 1350 and built many pā, or fortified villages, on its volcanic peaks. On March 20, 1840, Ngāti Whātua paramount chief Apihai Te Kawau signed the Treaty of Waitangi and made a strategic gift of land on the Waitematā Harbour for the new capital.

Auckland was founded on September 18, 1840, and became New Zealand’s capital in 1841. Wellington replaced it as the capital in 1865. Today Auckland is known as the City of Sails and is one of the world’s few cities with harbors on two separate major bodies of water.

  1. 1854Martha Holder of Karori became the first person baptized in New Zealand.
  2. 1880sLarge Latter-day Saint congregations began to develop, and many Māori embraced the restored gospel.
  3. 1889The Book of Mormon was first published in Māori.

  5. 1958The Auckland Stake was organized as the first stake in New Zealand.
  6. 1977A missionary training center opened in New Zealand.
  7. 2016The 30th stake in New Zealand was established in Dunedin.
