About the mission

The New Zealand Hamilton Mission covers the central part of New Zealand’s North Island, with Hamilton as its main city. The mission was organized on July 1, 2013.

Missionaries speak English and Māori. Māori has played an important role in the history of the Church in New Zealand.

A short history of the area

Hamilton is the main city of the mission, which serves the central part of New Zealand’s North Island. The area became closely connected with Church education and temple building during the 20th century.

Construction of the Church College of New Zealand began in Hamilton in 1950. The Hamilton New Zealand Temple and the Church College of New Zealand were dedicated in April 1958.

  1. 1854Martha Holder of Karori became the first person baptized in New Zealand.
  2. 1855The first branch in New Zealand was organized at Karori.
  3. 1880sMany Māori recognized the missionaries’ work as the fulfillment of earlier prophecies by Māori prophets and embraced the restored gospel.
  4. 1889The Book of Mormon was first published in Māori.
  5. 1950Construction began on the Church College of New Zealand in Hamilton.
  6. 1958The Hamilton New Zealand Temple was dedicated.
  7. 1958The Auckland Stake was organized as the first stake in New Zealand.
  8. 1977A missionary training center opened in Hamilton.
  9. 2013The New Zealand Hamilton Mission was organized on July 1.
  10. 2018A second temple was announced for Auckland.
