A short history of the area
Charlotte grew through trade, gold mining, banking, and transportation. A gold discovery in nearby Cabarrus County helped begin the nation's first gold rush, and the Charlotte Mint was founded in 1837. Today, Charlotte is the second-largest banking center in the United States and a major center of the NASCAR industry.
The Church here
- 1839Jedediah M. Grant, identified as the first missionary to North Carolina, traveled to the state.
- 1844Missionary Elder John Eldridge recalled that some early Church meetings in North Carolina caused “the greatest stirs imaginable.”
- 1845Missionaries had organized seven congregations with more than 200 members, and membership later reached 350.
- Mid-1870sMissionary work resumed in North Carolina after stopping during and after the Civil War.
- 1894–1899Nearly 700 people were baptized, seven Church buildings were constructed, 30 Sunday Schools were organized, and 20 congregations were established.
- 1948–1953A five-year construction project resulted in 16 new Church buildings in North Carolina.
- 1961The first stake in North Carolina was created in Kinston from the East District.
- 1973North Carolina had nearly 16,400 members in 53 congregations.
- 1999The Church dedicated a temple in Raleigh.
