A short history of the area
A fire destroyed the North Carolina State House in 1831, and the replacement State Capitol was completed in 1840. Raleigh surrendered to Union forces on April 13, 1865, during the closing days of the Civil War and avoided major destruction. Research Triangle Park, established in 1959, helped bring science and technology jobs and population growth to the area.
The Church here
- 1839Jedediah M. Grant, identified as the first missionary to North Carolina, traveled to the state.
- 1845Missionaries had organized seven congregations with more than 200 Church members. When Jedediah M. Grant left North Carolina, membership had increased to 350.
- Mid-1870sMissionary work resumed in North Carolina after stopping during and after the Civil War.
- 1894–1899Nearly 700 people were baptized, seven Church buildings were constructed, 30 Sunday Schools were organized, and 20 congregations were established.
- 1961The first stake in North Carolina was created in Kinston on August 27.
- 1973North Carolina had nearly 16,400 members in 53 congregations, with growth of nearly 400 new members per year.
- 1980The North Carolina Raleigh Mission was organized on July 1.
- 1999The Raleigh North Carolina Temple was dedicated on December 18 by President Gordon B. Hinckley.
