A short history of the area
Paraguay’s independence movement grew in Asunción. Secret meetings were held at Juana María de Lara’s home, and Governor Bernardo de Velasco surrendered during the night of 14–15 May 1811. Today, Asunción is Paraguay’s political center and is home to the country’s executive, legislative, and judicial powers.
The Church here
- 1948Samuel J. Skousen began holding Church meetings in his home in Asunción, and the first branch was organized there on July 26.
- 1948Alberto Rodríguez, the first Paraguayan convert, was baptized on August 21.
- 1949Missionaries first arrived in Paraguay after authorization was given to begin missionary work.
- 1950The Church received official government recognition in Paraguay.
- 1979The Asunción Paraguay Stake, the first stake in Paraguay, was organized on February 25.
- 1980Nearly all the Nivaclé people in the village of Mistolar were baptized.
- 1998The Paraguay Asunción North Mission was organized on July 1.
- 2002The Asunción Paraguay Temple was dedicated in May.
- 2009The Book of Mormon was published in Guarani.
