A short history of the area
Asunción played an important role in Paraguay’s independence movement. Secret meetings were held there in 1811, and Governor Bernardo de Velasco surrendered during the night of May 14–15. Today, the city is home to Paraguay’s executive, legislative, and judicial powers.
The Church here
- 1948Samuel J. Skousen was set apart as a missionary in the South American Mission before serving as air attaché at the United States embassy in Paraguay.
- 1948The Skousen family began holding Church meetings in their home in Asunción and invited neighbors.
- 1948Alberto Rodríguez, the first Paraguayan convert, was baptized on August 21.
- 1949Missionaries first arrived in Paraguay.
- 1950The Church obtained government recognition in February.
- 1972An elementary school opened in the Moroni meetinghouse in central Asunción.
- 1980Nearly all the Nivaclé people in the village of Mistolar were baptized.
- 1980sMissionaries began preaching to the Guarani and Nivaclé peoples.
- 2002The Asunción Paraguay Temple was dedicated in May.
