About the mission

The Peru Huancayo Mission is centered in Huancayo, a city in Peru's Mantaro Valley. Huancayo is known for its high elevation, mild days, cold nights, and important place in Peru's central highlands.

Spanish is the mission's language. Missionaries and families will encounter a city shaped by Indigenous, Spanish, and Peruvian history.

A short history of the area

The Huanca people lived in the area from around 500 BC. The region later became part of the Wari Empire and was annexed to the Inca Empire around 1460. Huancayo was officially founded as Santísima Trinidad de Huancayo on June 1, 1572, by Don Jerónimo de Silva.

Huancayo played a role in Peru's independence history. The city was liberated on November 20, 1820, and an 1854 accord made law in Huancayo officially ended slavery in Peru. Today, it is one of Peru's largest cities and stands more than 3,200 meters above sea level.

July 1956An official branch was organized in Peru.
1959The Andes Mission was organized with 300 members in five congregations.
1984The first stake in Huancayo was organized.
January 1988Seven stakes were created in one weekend during a visit by Elder M. Russell Ballard.
July 2013The Peru Huancayo Mission was created.
October 1, 2023President Russell M. Nelson announced the Huancayo Peru Temple.

Huancayo is known as La Ciudad Incontrastable, meaning “The Uncontrastable City.”
The city is crossed by the Shullcas, Chilca, and Mantaro rivers.
The Callao to La Oroya railway reached the area in 1908 and was later extended from Lima to Huancayo in the early 1930s.
