About the mission

The Peru Lima West Mission includes the northwestern portions of Lima and the northern half of the Lima region. Lima is Peru's capital and one of South America's largest cities.

Spanish is the main language spoken in the mission. Missionaries will hear Spanish in homes, neighborhoods, shops, and Church meetings.

A short history of the area

The Rímac, Chillón, and Lurín river valleys were home to pre-Inca settlements, including the Maranga and Lima cultures. Pachacámac was an important pilgrimage center from the 3rd to the 15th century, and the area later became part of the Inca Empire.

Francisco Pizarro founded Lima on January 6, 1535, calling it the City of the Kings. Lima became the capital of the Viceroyalty of Peru in 1543 and the capital of the independent Republic of Peru in 1821.

The Church here

1956A branch in Lima was organized on July 8 by Elder Henry D. Moyle, beginning organized Church activity in Peru.
1956Four missionaries arrived on August 7 to begin preaching in Peru.
1959The Andes Mission was organized with 300 members in five congregations.
1970Ecuador was separated from the Andes Mission, which then administered only Peru.
1974The mission was renamed the Peru Lima Mission.
1977The Peru Lima Mission was divided into the Peru Lima South and Peru Lima North Missions.
1988Seven stakes were created in one weekend during a visit by Elder M. Russell Ballard.
2010The Peru Lima West Mission was created from the Peru Lima East and Peru Lima North Missions.
