The Peru Piura Mission is based in Piura, a city in northwestern Peru. Piura lies about 50 miles south of Ecuador and 35 miles east of the Pacific Ocean.

A short history of the area

Francisco Pizarro founded Piura in July or August 1532 at the Tallán settlement of Tangarará. He named it San Miguel de la Nueva Castilla. Piura was the third Spanish city founded in South America and the first Spanish city founded in Peru.

The city moved several times before reaching its present location near the Catacaos Valley. English pirate Thomas Cavendish raided and ruined the city from January to May 1587, leading residents to relocate again. Piura later proclaimed independence from Spain on January 4, 1821.

  1. 1956A branch in Lima was organized on July 8, and four missionaries arrived on August 7.
  2. 1959The Andes Mission was established on November 1. At that time, there were five branches and 300 members.
  3. 1983The first stake in Piura was organized.
  4. 1988Seven stakes were created in one weekend in January.
  5. 1993A mission headquartered in Piura was created.
