About the mission

The Philippines Laoag Mission is headquartered in Laoag on the northwestern tip of Luzon. It was formed from areas of the Ilagan, Baguio, and Olongapo missions.

Tagalog and Cebuano are spoken in the mission. Laoag is also part of the Ilocos Norte region, where Ilocano is an important local language.

A short history of the area

Laoag was founded in 1580. Spanish forces reached the area after Juan de Salcedo landed in Vigan on June 13, 1572, and traveled toward Laoag, Currimao, and Badoc.

Laoag became the capital of Ilocos Norte in 1818 and became a city after a plebiscite on June 19, 1965. It is known as the Sunshine City and is the northernmost city in the Philippines.

1973The first stake in the Philippines was organized.
