About the mission

The Portugal Porto Mission is based in Porto, Portugal, in the northern part of the country. Porto stands near the mouth of the Douro River and is one of Portugal’s best-known cities.

Portuguese is the main language missionaries and families will use. A few simple Portuguese phrases can help with greetings, meals, shopping, and daily conversations.

A short history of the area

Human settlement at the mouth of the Douro River dates back to at least the 8th century BC. Porto later became an outpost of the Roman Republic, and in 868 Vímara Peres fortified and repopulated the area between the Minho and Douro rivers.

Porto hosted the marriage of John I of Portugal and Philippa of Lancaster in 1387. Prince Henry the Navigator launched the conquest of Ceuta from Porto in 1415. The city’s historic centre, the Luís I Bridge, and the Monastery of Serra do Pilar became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996.

1954The earliest known Latter-day Saints to live in Portugal were members of the U.S. military.
1958The Church organized a servicemen’s group in the Azores.
1967The Lajes Branch, the first branch in Portugal, was organized.
1974Church leaders investigated conditions in Portugal, and the first mission in the country was established in Lisbon later that year.
April 1975President Thomas S. Monson dedicated Portugal for missionary work.
October 1975The first baptism in Porto took place.
1981The Lisbon Portugal Stake, the first stake in the country, was created on July 10.
July 1987The Portugal Porto Mission was formed from the Portugal Lisbon Mission.
