A short history of the area

San Juan is one of the three most common places associated with the name San Juan. The name is also used for cities and places in many countries and territories, including Argentina, the Philippines, and Puerto Rico.

“San Juan” is Spanish for “Saint John.” The name is connected with many places, islands, festivals, and historic ships across the Spanish-speaking world.

The Church here

1947Latter-day Saint military servicemen began holding Church meetings in Guajataca.
January 1964The first full-time missionaries arrived in Puerto Rico.
February 1964The first convert, a serviceman, was baptized.
1964The first Puerto Rican joined the Church in the month after the first convert’s baptism.
1970Spanish-speaking missionaries were sent to Puerto Rico. A Spanish-speaking congregation was organized, the first meetinghouse opened, and home seminary began.
July 1979The Puerto Rico San Juan Mission was created.
1981Church President Spencer W. Kimball visited members in Puerto Rico.
1987Church membership in the area had increased to 12,000.
1993Membership in the area reached 19,700 after several military Church members had moved away.
