A short history of the area
Peter the Great moved the government to Saint Petersburg in 1712, but Moscow became the capital again on March 12, 1918. Today, Moscow is a major European city known for its parks, historic buildings, and extensive metro system.
The Church here
- 1843Joseph Smith called Orson Hyde and George J. Adams to prepare for a mission to Russia.
- 1866Brigham Young Jr., John W. Young, and Carl Widerborg visited St. Petersburg to explore the possibility of preaching in Russia.
- 1895The Lindlöf family joined the Church in St. Petersburg.
- 1903Elder Francis M. Lyman offered special prayers for Russia and its people in St. Petersburg and Moscow.
- 1990The first Russian Latter-day Saint congregations were formed in St. Petersburg and Vyborg.
- 1990The Finland Helsinki East Mission was established with responsibility for missionary work in the Soviet Union.
- 1991The first branch in Moscow was organized on March 24, and the Church was officially recognized by the Russian government in May.
- 1992The Finland Helsinki East Mission became the Russia Moscow Mission on February 3.
- 2011The first stake in Russia was organized in Moscow.
