A short history of the area
Singapore became part of the Straits Settlements in 1867. After Japanese occupation during World War II, it gained self-governance in 1959, joined Malaysia in 1963, and became the independent Republic of Singapore on August 9, 1965.
The Church here
- 1960Four members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints lived in Singapore.
- 1963The first Church meetings in Singapore were held with British military members and members from Hong Kong.
- 1968The first full-time missionaries arrived on March 19. Alice Tan, the first convert, was baptized on May 4. The Singapore Branch was organized on October 13.
- 1969Elder Ezra Taft Benson dedicated Singapore for the preaching of the gospel on April 14. The Southeast Asia Mission was organized with headquarters in Singapore on November 1.
- 1970Government restrictions on foreign missionary visas and proselytizing led local members to take greater responsibility for missionary work.
- 1977Most new converts had been introduced to the gospel by other members.
- 2019President Russell M. Nelson visited Singapore in November, praised the Singapore Saints, and prayed for a day when they would have a temple of their own.
