A short history of the area

English settlers founded Charleston in 1670 as Charles Town, naming it for King Charles II. The settlement began at Albemarle Point and moved to its present location at Oyster Point in 1680, where the Ashley and Cooper rivers meet.

Charleston became an important port and later played a major role in the Civil War. Confederate shore batteries fired on Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor on April 12, 1861. The city is also known for its Gullah heritage, historic buildings, City Market, and coastal food traditions.

  1. 1839Missionary Lysander M. Davis arrived in South Carolina and found people prepared for baptism through the teaching of Emmanual Masters Murphy.
  2. 1897A mob burned one of South Carolina's first Latter-day Saint meetinghouses in Centerville.
  3. 1899The Centerville meetinghouse was rebuilt and burned again.
  4. 1947South Carolina's first stake was created in Columbia on October 19.
  5. 1972The Charleston stake was organized.
  6. 1999The Columbia South Carolina Temple was dedicated on October 16.
