A short history of the area

Dar es Salaam began near Mzizima, a coastal fishing village whose Swahili name means “healthy town.” Sultan Majid bin Said of Zanzibar began building a new city near Mzizima in 1865 or 1866 and named it Dar es Salaam, meaning “Abode of Peace.”

The city grew after the German East Africa Company established a station there in 1887. Tanzania planned to move its capital to Dodoma between 1973 and 1996, but Dar es Salaam continued to hold many government offices and remains the country's largest city.

1991Two families from the United States and Canada living in Dar es Salaam began holding Church meetings.
July 1991Tanzania became part of the newly formed Kenya Nairobi Mission.
February 1992The first missionary couple arrived in Tanzania.
1992The Church was legally recognized in Tanzania.
December 1992A branch was created in Dar es Salaam.
February 1998Members from Tanzania traveled to Nairobi, Kenya, to hear President Gordon B. Hinckley speak.
March 2002Members from Tanzania made a 68-hour bus trip to the Johannesburg South Africa Temple.
