A short history of the area

The Karankawa and Atakapa peoples lived in the Houston area for at least 2,000 years before the first known settlers arrived. The Allen brothers founded Houston on August 30, 1836, near the meeting point of Buffalo Bayou and White Oak Bayou. The city was named for Sam Houston and incorporated on June 5, 1837.

Houston became the temporary capital of the Republic of Texas in 1836, but the capital moved to Austin in 1839. The Port of Houston opened to deep-water traffic in 1914. In 1961, NASA established the Manned Spacecraft Center, later renamed the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center.

  9. 2021The Church helped open the Houston Family Transfer Center in partnership with community organizations.
