A short history of the area

The Karankawa and Atakapa peoples lived in the Houston area for at least 2,000 years before the arrival of the first known settlers. The Allen brothers founded Houston on August 30, 1836, near the meeting of Buffalo Bayou and White Oak Bayou. The city was named for Sam Houston and incorporated on June 5, 1837.

Houston became an important center for transportation and science. The Port of Houston opened to deep-water shipping in 1914, and NASA established the Manned Spacecraft Center there in 1961. The center was renamed the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center in 1973.
