A short history of the area

Present-day Houston was occupied by the Karankawa and Atakapa Indigenous peoples for at least 2,000 years before the first known settlers arrived. The city was founded on August 30, 1836, at the meeting of Buffalo Bayou and White Oak Bayou, now called Allen’s Landing.

Augustus Chapman Allen and John Kirby Allen developed the town and named it for Sam Houston. Houston was incorporated on June 5, 1837. Today, the city is known as Space City and is home to the Port of Houston and NASA’s Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center.

  2. 1953A stake was created in Houston on October 11.
  3. 1976The first mission in Houston was created from the Texas San Antonio Mission.
  4. 1990The Texas Houston East Mission was created from the original Houston mission.
  5. 1994Church members responded to flooding in Texas.
  6. 1997The Texas Houston South Mission was created on July 1 from parts of the other two Houston missions.
  7. 2008Church members responded to Hurricane Ike.
  8. 2017Church members responded to Hurricane Harvey.
  9. 2019Church members responded to Tropical Storm Imelda.
