The Texas Lubbock Mission covers western Texas and eastern New Mexico, with its headquarters in Lubbock.

A short history of the area

The land that became Lubbock was part of Comancheria in 1867. Lubbock County was founded in 1876 and named for Thomas Saltus Lubbock. The city was settled in 1889, merged with Monterey in 1890, became the county seat in 1891, and was incorporated on March 16, 1909.

Lubbock grew as a South Plains center after the railroad arrived in 1909. Texas Technological College, now Texas Tech University, was founded there in 1923. Today, Lubbock is known as the Hub City and is the largest contiguous cotton-growing region in the world.

  1. 1850sLatter-day Saint missionaries preached in Texas.
  2. 1875Proselytizing resumed in Texas after missionary work had stopped before the Civil War.
  3. 1952The first stake in Texas was organized in El Paso.
  4. 1984The Dallas Texas Temple was dedicated in October as the first temple in Texas.
  5. 1993Richard A. Searfoss of League City became the first Latter-day Saint to pilot a space shuttle on October 14.
  6. 2002The Texas Lubbock Mission was announced by the First Presidency on March 9, covering western Texas and eastern New Mexico.
  7. 2017Church members responded to Hurricane Harvey in Texas.
