A short history of the area
In 1731, 56 Canary Island settlers established the villa of San Fernando de Béxar, the first regularly organized civil government in Texas. San Antonio later became central to the Battle of the Alamo in 1836. In 2015, the Alamo and four nearby missions were designated a UNESCO World Heritage site.
